What to bring on your Workshop

The temperature on the Iceland at this time of the year is around -5 oc - 5 oc but it can be really windy so can feel really really cold. Having multiple layers of clothing is really important as is good waterproofs. All the recommended gear is listed below and I would also stress just how important full ankle boots are. The terrain is uneven and these are a must.

Things to bring on a workshop (ICELAND)

  • Camera Backpack(s) - A mid size back back is best so you aren’t tempted to take too much on longer hikes. I actually take two - one big one for travelling and a smaller one for hiking (that I put in hold luggage)

  • Waterproof clothing (rain is always forecast and we will go out in the rain) - recommend Gortex

  • Warm clothing - multi-layers are best.  It will be warming whilst hiking and cold when stood around for a few hours in the wind

  • 2 pairs of walking shoes (I actually have a small pair for travel and and angle pair in my hold luggage) - in case one gets too wet. This isn’t required just and you should be able to dry the shoes out in the evening.

  • Hiking trousers – wind resistant, quick drying, synthetic material (I take two pairs)

  • Small folding matt for sitting on to keep dry - really useful

  • Hat / Gloves

  • Drinks bottle for water

  • Drinks bottle for coffee while out

  • Snacks for when we are out (we will regularly stop at services stations out there though)

  • Camera (doh!)

  • Drone - if you have one then there are chances to get some good shots but it is risky and often windy. I have lost a drone in Iceland.

  • Lenses (ideally 16-35mm, 24-70mm and 70-200mm). F4 is fine for all lenses. The most important one is 16mm as 24mm isn’t wide enough for a lot of the scenes.

  • Tripod (ideally a sturdy one as could be windy and we won't be walking too far on most days).  Small tripods are often a waste of time in wind. I have a Benro Mach 3 - see my gear list

  • Spare Batteries

  • SD cards

  • Laptop / hard drive if you have one for editing images

  • Cloth for wiping dry your camera (IMPORTANT!). I take multiple.

  • Lens cloths (in addition to above)

  • Filters if you have them (no need for graduated filters - just ND and polariser)

  • Head Torch that works (often people find they don’t work when they arrive or don’t last). We may be walking in the dark for the Aurora. Ideally if you have a red mode on your head torch that is good.

  • Rain cover for camera (A shower cap is a good idea)
